Annual Newsletter | 2023-24 Season

Dear Ace Environmental Services Ltd. Sponsors and Supporters:

Thank you for your continued support throughout the years, we truly would not be able

to accomplish what we have without your help. This newsletter is intended to give you a

short synopsis of the team’s activities and accomplishments from the previous year.

Starting in June 2023, our newly elected co-captains, Nicholas Amy and Ivy Reisner,

established the overall design philosophy for the team and focused their efforts on

refining what we have built before in 2022. Despite the challenges of the previous year,

the team's resolve was renewed in September, fueled by the addition of curious, new

members. Through detailed design and an in-depth 'failure mode and effects' analysis

on the previous car, every system on the car received minor iterations and

improvements, including our second ever carbon-fibre monocoque chassis.

In January, the monocoque neared completion, and the race began for other subteams

to manufacture and test their assemblies to suit the modified chassis. This year, our

suspension team unveiled a brand new kinematic design that offered improved

adjustability and handling. Notably, the new system featured in-house CNC machined

upright assemblies; a huge step forward in our team's manufacturing capabilities, at the

cost of some extremely late nights for our suspension crew.

The end result of our efforts was a simpler, leaner vehicle than what was produced

previously, weighing in at just 203-kg, and making a respectable 50-kW and 47-Nm at

the wheel, all while revving to its 14000–RPM redline. The car neared completion in

April and received a colourful new livery – courtesy of our title sponsor, Tycrop

Manufacturing – and promptly completed a 22-km mock endurance trial mere days

before our unveiling event.

Competition this year was held a week earlier than in previous years, forcing students to

balance final exams while continuing to put the finishing touches on the car in April.

While in Michigan, our extensive work with carbon fibre composites, and our success

with CNC machining, garnered the attention of a certain group of Haas machinists, and

in recognition of our struggle and determination awarded our recently graduated,

technical advisor Jordan Myers a full set of Haas-branded precision tools.

Additionally, for the first time in recent team history, our work earned us the privilege of

participating as design finalists in-person, where the top 10 teams compete to

demonstrate their understanding of design principles, vehicle dynamics, and motorsport

tuning. Overall, the team placed 6th out of 120 universities in the design event;

contesting top universities such as the University of California – Berkeley, Georgia

Institute of Technology, and Purdue University – W Lafayette.

Our momentum continues as we begin the new school year, and we would again like to

extend our gratitude for your continuous support. We hope you will continue with us on

this journey as we construct the 28th Formula UBC Racing car in 2024-2025.
